Taggie

taggie, the RFID enabled “intelligent“ zip as a means of preventing counterfeiting in fashion, and other sectors.

The ever increasing problem of counterfeiting of garments and accessories, in many cases related to little or lack of transparency throughout the manufacturing process, brings about to companies involved not only loses in terms of money, but which is more important, in terms of image and customers’ trust in the brand.

In fact the major association in this sector, crucial to protect the true value of Made in Italy, are perfectly aware of the problem and claim that the situation urge for regulations that oblige the manufacturers to communicate clearly the origin of their product.

After a thorough analysis of the manufacturing process of fashion accessories or garments in all of its phases, it has been decided that a zip allows a perfect integration with the identification device.
The main reasons are:

  • a zip is normally inserted during the production of an item, a bag or a shoe
  • it cannot be easily replaced without damaging the product
  • it can be inserted solely by the manufacturer , which translates into further guarantee of the origin

These features brings us to equip a zip with an RFID inlay in order to identify and protect better the item.

The new intelligent zip can be actually considered an invisible electronic brand. The product is identified through a unique serial number impressed in the memory of the chip. However, it can be additionally protected by cryptographic keys and codes much more difficult to copy than a simple logo.

The use of RFID technology offers other significant advantages such as anti collision, namely possibility to identify numerous objects at the same time and without visual contact needed. This can greatly improve warehouse management and contribute to reduction of errors.
The read/write memory of the chip allows adding new information about the product, for instance production site, destination, etc.

Thanks to Taggie it is possible to know not only who manufactured the item or its components, but also a series of detailed data regarding the manufacturing process. The traceability in fact becomes an element to distinguish the true from the fake. It gives an added value to the product as well, “telling” the story of its production.

The project Taggie, has been developed in collaboration with Giovanni Lanfranchi Spa, one of the major Italian zip manufacturers, Politecnico di Milano, Indaco Dept., University of Bergamo, Sengalt and Micromega Network. LAB ID designed and produced the RFID inlays to insert in zips.
